Combat in this period was primarily infantry-based, with shield walls being extremely important. There are 13 playable factions, forming 6 separate cultures, which replace religion in the mod. The map does not include all of Europe, so it feels a lot like the other scenarios in the Kingdoms expansion (but it is way more awesome than the Britannia campaign). Four separate Saxon (Christian) kingdoms exist in England at the time, and the Danes begin with a hefty invasion force ready to strike. It starts in 865, on the eve of the Danish invasion of Saxon England and goes to that important year, 1066. It's really fun, very well-polished, and I recommend it to anyone still playing M2:K out there! I just started playing The Last Kingdom mod for Medieval 2: Kingdoms the other day, after having played Stainless Steel for a long time.
